Skiing

When I Ride from Tom Day.

This is a nice web edit that Tom Day put together with shots from my 2011 trip to Points North Heli skiing in Cordova AK.  This was all shot on 16mm film! This wasnt the first time I have shot with 16mm but it is the first time I filmed it professionally and it turned out great. It was awesome working with such a talented filmer, here is his edit!

Caitlin and Erica at Brighton.

Erica and Caitlin got some shooting in on Brightons biggest pow date yet! December 15th produced an nice storm and looks like the snow is going to keep falling, something like 5 feet before its all said and done.  Sounds great to me, thanks to Riley Snyder for the photos and check out his facebook all season for awesome photos.photo

Tumblr Post.

I got a twitter update that this dude on Tumblr had tagged me in a post.  So I went to check it out, and as I started reading it I was so excited that someone could write something so nice about my skiing.  It was some really awesome inspiring words so I thought I woud share it with you all here. Thanks for checking out my blog and I am also on Tumblr here.  It is also written in Spanish below.  There is a huge community of skiers sharing photos and video on Tumblr. I recommend getting an account if you dont have one already.  I find alot of interesting ski stuff on Tumblr, everyone shares the good stuff more so it is easy to find the goods.

TIM DURTSCHI (@TIMDURTSCHI) THE UNKNOWN ARTIST OF THE POWDER SNOW

The Unknown Artist of the Powder Snow

All of us know important freeskiers, such as Wallisch, Bobby Brown, Harlaut, Gus K., Sean Pettit, Torin Wallace, Thovex or Pep Fujas.  And other ones who are a bit less known such as David Wise (early gold medalist at SuperPipe in the XVI edition of Winter X Games at Aspen, Colorado in 2012), Ben Moxham or Tucker Perkins.

But there isn’t anyone like Tim Durtschi over the powder snow. Born to ski, he reaches an Olympic level. Promising to be a star of the freeskier… Actually, he is a star of freeskier. Fresh air, mountains, freedom, having fun with friends and specially, powder snow. Spending hours with a shovel to get a jump which will only enjoy few seconds, just the time in the air after jumping. Three seconds? Four? Maybe five seconds?

Stepping on the snow, riding between the trees, leaving the track, jumping and taking the world by storm. New tricks. Snacks to make a great day on-hill.

Normal life if there is no snow, with family, at party, visiting Saga Outwear’s store, getting some offers from Atomic Skis, one of his sponsors. But as he tells to a Poor Boyz Production interview: “Skiing will always be the same with or without sponsors”. And this phrase is the model of what skiing is for pleasure.

(Probably some bugs in the English translation. Sorry)

Vitality.

I have been doing some pre-season conditioning at Vitality FFP in SLC Utah.  The FFP stands for Functional Fitness Programing, which was a new term to me upon my joining.  The gym is great, and working with the owner Chase is challenging and fun.  He has great stuff geared toward athletes, Jeremy Jones (jibber) also works out there pre-season!  At first glance the gym looks simple… but the workouts are not, and everything I have done so far is geared for what I will be doing during the ski season.  I have always kind of put off training, feeling like I would get enough work out from skiing, but there is so much I can do to prepare and as I get older I feel more and more like its a priority!  Huge thanks to Vitality and Chase and keep on doing what you do!

Points North Heli Segment.

A huge thanks To Warren Miller Entertainment for showing the world what we do and for a beautiful Tribute to our Friend, Mentor, and All Round Amazing Man Kip Garre. We miss you Kip.  I was a part of the crew that filmed for “Like There’s No Tommorow” along with Kip and Seth Westcott, a two time olympian badass!  Definitely want to make it back to PNH they have amazing terrain and great vibe all around.  Check them out here.  If you want the ski camp lifestyle but heli skiing instead of summer camp, check them out, they set you up with lodging dinner in the cafeteria well your off the hill and once your on-hill… well watch this movie to find out!

Dream Factory Bloopers Outtakes.

In AK this year I tried something new, every year I try to do something new, and this year I went for the double with Cliff take off.  This was in Haines Alaska flying with SEABA Heli Guides, where I also got to ski with Nick Martini who was on his first mission to AK.  I remember my first time in AK and it was great to have the support of the riders there who have experienced AK before.  It was really awesome to share the experience with him in Haines.

SagaTV Summer at Windells.

I spent some time at Windells this summer and got a few shots in the SagaTV Saga Fam Summer Edit.  Here it is along with the entire cast of Saga Riders who call Mt. Hood Home in the summer months.

Jumping over the campers SESSION 3

TGR World Premiere.

Jackson Hole 2012, the annual TGR world premiere took place at the home of Teton Gravity Research.  I headed up from SLC, a nice 300 Mile drive to spend the weekend with the TGR family.  It started thursday night with a family dinner, an annual event.  My favorite part of the weekend was the golf tournament, I made some great putts (check out the video)   I will be at the Denver and Boulder shows next week.

Filming with Field.

Atomic made the wise choice to shoot their catalog in New Zealand this year, which means I got an awesome Southern Hemisphere vay-cay or business trip if you want to be grown-up. I guess it makes sense since the Wells brothers (Jossi, Byron) live here, but on top of that the skiing here is “sweet as”.  From the major hype of snow park to the pow fields of Treble Cone, there are countless crews down here making the best of the snow (while my friends in Utah cook like rotisserie chicken). The Atomic crew brought along an A-team of photography, (obviously the athletes but you know that, and if you don’t peep the stats here), Christian Pondella and Mirja Geh as well as local Kiwi Camilla Stoddart who shoots for New Zealand Skier mag.  It was great to have the Atomic team all together, especially without the added chaos that filming season brings. There was lots of time to talk share stories and relax, and since it was my first trip to NZ so many new places to check out.  I also got the chance to ski with Atomic rider from NZ George Pengelly, he is a 17 year old pow ripper who is holding it down in NZ. Huge thanks to Atomic for the experience, and if you happen to run into a #sagafam employee this winter, chances are extremely high they will be riding some Atomic skis!  Oh and the second part of my trip is filming with Field Productions at Mt. Cook NZ.

The trip with Field has been awesome.  The crew is 2 filmers (Filip, Lasse) and riders Andreas Wiig and Aleksander Ausdral.  It has been cool to shoot alot from the heli, especially on backcountry kickers, which is not the norm.  Usually its helis filming lines but this session has been alot about finding cool jump spots, cause thats what New Zealand seems to be supplying us with.  After this trip its off to Utah for some film premieres of THE DREAM FACTORY!

 Hanging with Filip, fields filmer/director.

Atomic Team Shoot.

Atomic came down to New Zealand for the second season to get shots for there 2013 catalog.  New Zealand has alot going on right now, it is full blown winter so everyone is having a blast here no matter what resort you go to.  I spent some time at Cardrona with Byron Wells and George Pengelly. I also skied with Molly Baker at Cardrona and we did a fair share of Bike riding (downhill Mt. Bike!) around Wanaka.  Wanaka has some of the best bike trails I have ever seen, compared to the states they go all out down here on bike trails (also Free).  It was super fun to hand with the Atomic Crew, most of which who were in attendance including, Sage Cattabriga,  Daron Rahlves, Todd Ligare, Molly Baker, George Pengelly, Chris Benchetler, Dana Flahr, Jossi and Byron Wells, Elias Ambhul and myself!

Camp Woodward.

I traveled all the way from Oregon to Colorado, over 1000 miles to attend the Camp Woodward at Copper Saga Session 4.  I had a blast, I had some great Campers this session, they even made some videos of there own.  Be sure to check out the session video below, I am the one wearing the Blue Flannel and Grey Saga Anomie Pants.  Copper didn’t have uber amounts of snow but they made it happen.

The Dream Factory.

The Dream Factory box art

Check out the new movie from TGR called “The Dream Factory”

For the past 16 years, Teton Gravity Research (TGR) has made the pilgrimage to America’s last frontier, Alaska: The Dream Factory. Throughout history, Alaska has been a place of dreams. From the early gold rush days, to the rise of commercial fishing, to the explosion of the ski and snowboard freeride movement, people have left everything to follow their dreams and journey to this foreign, mystical land. Like the frontiersmen before them, the pioneers of the freeride movement like Doug Coombs, Eric Pehota, and Trevor Petersen made the dream of skiing in Alaska a reality.

Follow TGR’s modern day athletes on this cinematic voyage through Alaska’s awe-inspiring expanse, rich history, and colorful characters. Watch as the TGR crew ventures from AK training grounds Jackson Hole, WY and Pemberton, BC, and delves deep into the Alaskan way of life during last year’s record snowfall in AK, skiing terrain most of us only dream about.

Starring: Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Dash Longe, Dana Flahr, Tim Durtschi, Seth Morrison, Erik Roner, Chris Benchetler, Todd Ligare, Griffin Post, Ralph Backstrom, Daron Rahlves, Angel Collinson, Matt Philippi, Clayton Vila, Cam Riley, Dylan Hood, John Spriggs, Rory Bushfield, Max Hammer, Nick Martini, Dave Treadway, Maxim Arsenault, Forrest Shearer, Daniel Tisi

On Location: Jackson Hole, WY / Valdez, AK / Haines, AK / Anchorage, AK / Whittier, AK / Northern Chugach, AK / Valdez Heli Ski Guides / Alyeska Resort / SEABA Heli / Alaska Heli Skiing / Girdwood, AK / Pemberton, BC

“The Dream Factory is the most elaborate TGR film to date,” says Todd Jones, TGR co-founder. “We shot over 50 interviews and uncovered the true history of skiing and snowboarding in Alaska. The story will take viewers through Alaska’s history as a state, its skiing history, and showcase the modern progression of skiing and snowboarding – from steep spines and big mountain terrain, to urban and all-around progressive freestyle.”

The Dream Factory will premiere September 15, 2012, at the Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, Wyo., followed by a worldwide film tour.

Windells 2012 Session 3

I spent a few days at Windells camp Session Three.  Got to hang out with the Saga team members that were coaching up there.  My sister was killing it stacking mad footy  during the Line week can’t wait to see the Session edit coming soon, I will post it up here!  The Gallagher Hammer was so much fun to put into use, it really makes a splat, had to shower after using it.  The Saga house is lush as well hope I can make it back there for some more summer skiing/relaxation!

Dodge balle wind up on the far right, so many targets, so much fun.

Haines Alaska.

I have been spending my April in Alaska, Haines to be specific.  I have had some great times here in the past and getting another opportunity to ski here is a dream come true.  This year I linked up with TGR and Seaba Heli Guides, where in years past I have flown with Alaska heliskiing.  Our guide for the Trip was Chris Coulter.  His name might sound familiar from the snowboard world, he filmed with Absinthe in the past and we could not be more lucky to have such a knowledgable guide.  He took us to some really cool zones, I was accompanied by Chris Benchetler who it was awesome to ski with because we both have a little bit of experience in AK and we both had a lot to share with each other. (He gave me a sneak peak of the benchetler graphic for next year also!)  Here are some photos that our guide Chris took, Thank you Coulter for an amazing trip!

Cover Shot.

Fall-Line is a UK magazine that covers ski and Snowboard stuff since 1991.  I have never read the magazine or seen it, but if you live in the UK I bet your a subscriber!  The shot is by Hans Christian Gulsvik, from my trip To Haines in 2010.

Utah to Alaska.

We are settled down in Girdwood, nestled up in a real nice cabin, with the crew sledded up and the resort in our backyard.  It has been a lot of fun so far, after the drive from Alaska it was nice to cool off for a day or to, but of course the weather doesn’t think that way, it just keeps snowing!  The drive to Alaska clocked in just under 3000  miles, according to my odometer but who knows how accurate that is, either way it was a long way!  We made a necessary stop to the LIARD hot springs, which made the next half of the drive ok, because you get a stiff back driving so far.

 Where the buffalo roam.

HOT SPRINGS.

Made it to my uncles house in Girdwood! All in one piece.

AFTER!!!

So these are some photos from my trip so far, things are going to start getting better and better as we sled more and find more sick zones, once we get into the backcountry its on!

AK Update.

Another great week at Alyeska Resort, going to put together a nice little go pro edit of shredding the resort.  Got to ski Max’s Mountain, which opened for the first time in the history of the resort! Amazing experience. Check out updates on TGR tetongravity.com and check my Twitter for my new edit.

AK Trip.

Alyeska has been great, check out the update at TGR.  These photos are from the Alyeska Resort Facebook Page.  Got to ski the glacier bowl, it was a good time and the slow January sun creeps there just long enough to get some shots.

The Rotten Few and Loon.

I made my way out east for the Atomic Tour De Shred to hang with Sage Todd and Chris Benchetler. I also got to hang with Mary Walsh who showed me around the east, she knows that place well which is nice because I do not.

We Are Skiing.

We are skiing is the motto of Atomic.  Every year they come out with a book to give to retailers, a nice coffee table piece. I had a couple shots and here is a review of the book.  Todd Ligare made the cover, he kills it, if you have not heard of him go watch TGR “One for the Road”.  I rocked the Atomic Benchetler last year and they look good in these shots.  Going to be rocking them again this year, because this years graphics are even better, I saw them, got a peak, check out www.chrisbenchetler.com for more sneak peaks!

There is only 1 first try.

Tree Crash from Revolver.

You have probably seen this, if you watch PBP movies, you know it. It is the most horrific looking crash I have ever had, and I hope nothing like this ever happens again (knock on wood).  Check it out if you want to see the worst crash of my career, luckily I was not injured to badly just a really really sore back for a while.

Snowmobile Break in.

Day one on the sled, my skidoo summit 800.  The thing has 1500 miles and is running like a dream.  I am going to take really good care of it this year because it is in its prime right now.  I rode around Bachelor, checked out the snow depth, we could use more but that is always the story in November, at least the mountain is open and the forecast looks promising for the next month.  Also got to ski at Bachelor, picked up my season pass, Love riding for the best mountain in Oregon (sorry Hood, I love you too!)

Smith Optics.

The webisodes are starting to drop for prospecting Idaho, from Smith Optics.  Be sure to check out the photo Galleries as well, there is a lot of content from the trip.  We had a grip of filmers up there dedicated to building the webisodes, and a bunch more filmers and photographers there on top of that to make sure each athlete got shots.

The first episode: The first group of skiers descends upon Smiley Creek. Cody Barnhill, Tim Durtschi and Tyler Ceccanti explore the private zone.
